I just read an article called "Mother's Day Turns 100: Its Surprisingly Dark History" from National Geographic.

I found it interesting and could see this type of article being used in a few ways.

For example, if you're doing a lesson on singular and plural possessives, this article talks about how Anna Jarvis fought to keep Mother's Day as a singular possessive. She wanted Mother's Day to be less about capitalism and more about honoring someone's own mother.

When I think of lessons that I remember, I think of stories tied to the skill that helps me remember long term. This article might be a good example to help students understand the difference between Mother's (singular possessive) and Mothers' (plural possessive).

If I were preparing students for Common Core assessments, I might ask the following questions to help students learn to make claims and cite evidence:

1. In the title of the article, Mother's Day is described as having a "dark history." What does "dark" mean in the title? Use evidence from the article to support your answer.

2. How did the observance of Mother's Day change over time? How did this change affect Anna Jarvis? Use details from the story to support your answer.

Use the Comments section to share questions that you might ask your students about this article. Feel free to comment about how to adapt the questions I created to help make them better.Cheryl Ticehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06976366669762311075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481639966829558786.post-64225834811455816742014-01-27T08:57:00.001-05:002014-01-27T08:57:09.596-05:00iPad Apps that Support LiteracyI did some research for my Addison teachers on iPad apps that support literacy. I thought I would share with everyone. If you have others that help develop literacy skills, please comment and share below.

Before I started hunting for apps, I wanted to familiarize myself with some strategies for using iPads to foster literacy. I found this archived webinar in which Richard Colosi shares strategies for integrating iPad in Literacy Circles. It is an hour long, but well-worth the time. He shares some incredible strategies.

There are several online tools you can use to download and embed video right into your flipchart.

This helps make sure you have materials you need in case the internet is down and you have a class to teach. It is also great for avoiding inappropriate "suggested videos" at the end of YouTube videos, if you are showing a video to little ones... You also avoid seeing the comments at the bottom of the videos that are sometimes inappropriate.

Keep copyright law in mind and cite your sources! Once downloaded, you should use a program like Any Video Converter or FreeMake Video Converter to take a shorter clip out of a longer video before you embed it into your flipchart. (FreeMake Video Converter is on our GST Software Center for you to download at work).

KeepVid.com Handout (Go to KeepVid.com website)

KeepTube.com Handout (Go to Keep-Tube.com website)

--------------------------------------------

You can also embed a video directly from YouTube without downloading it. Follow the directions below:

Go to YouTube.com

Search for and locate a video you want to embed.
I was meeting with a middle school French teacher today and she shared this site with me: http://www.promotelanguage.com

It looks like an excellent resource for ELA and World Language teachers. There are ideas to help you plan lessons using a wide variety of strategies. Their goal is to "... share tried-and-true activities that are also rooted in research...". They want you to look at the techniques and associated the activities, change them to meet your needs, and share them with colleagues.

Have you seen these Common Core resources for teachers?

I found these Common Core Checklists on a blog called The Curriculum Corner. These checklists are an excellent tool to help you track the standards you've worked on with students during the school year.

Kathy Schrock also has a list of Common Core assessments and rubrics on her website.

Here is a Common Core Standards Writing Rubric for Grades 9-10 and 11-12.

Check out the Smarter Balanced Writing Rubrics posted on the Saluda County Schools Website.

Do you have any Common Core resources you'd like to share? Please leave a comment! :-)
Check out Pinterest, especially if you're looking to jazz up some of the materials in the Common Core Modules!

Use the Search Tool in Pinterest to find all sorts of great resources for your classroom. You can search by grade level, strategies, skills, etc...

Did you know that there are dozens of anchor charts aligned with Common Core on Pinterest? Narrow your search by searching for anchor charts on a specific subject. For example, a search for Math Anchor Charts provides many anchor charts for all kinds of math. You can be even more specific by including a specific math topic, such as Algebra Anchor Charts in your search.

A search of Close Reading offers anchor charts specifically about close reading along with strategies and questions to ask when doing close reading with students...

You can plug in different words and phrases from the Common Core Standards into the Pinterest Search Tool to find pins on the many different skills students are learning within the Common Core. Examples:

Cite Text Evidence

Main Idea

Text Structure

Ratios and Proportions

Make sure to sign up for your own Pinterest account. Once you have an account, when you search for pins, you can add the pins you like best to your own boards. You can invite others to pin to your boards. If you work as a team with your grade-level or department-level
colleagues, together you'll find many excellent strategies and tools to
use with your students very quickly.

If you have a Pinterent account, what are some of your favorite searches and pins?

Happy Pinning!
I was inspired to blog today by one of the middle school teachers I am helping today.

She told me that she will be out and there will be a substitute teacher in for her on Thursday and Friday. In order to make sure that students will continue to be productive while she's gone, she came up with a very nice way to make students accountable for their work in her absence.

On a handout she created, she put the Project Due Date, the Project Objective, and the Task. The students are making a PowerPoint to practice knowledge of House and Home vocabulary in French. They'll record audio in PowerPoint to demonstrate correct pronunciation of the words in French.

She also included space for them to record their goals for what they want to accomplish each day. At the end of each day of the project, they will submit a written response to the following questions:

Did you accomplish today's goals?

If yes, how and why?

If not, why not? What will you do differently tomorrow?

Tonight for homework, I am going to...

What a great way to help keep kids on track and help them set and achieve their own goals!

Nice artifact for APPR!Cheryl Ticehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06976366669762311075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481639966829558786.post-39220402642403766902012-09-04T07:30:00.000-04:002012-09-04T07:30:01.904-04:00Web 2.0 Reminders - Keeping Students and Teachers Safe Online<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Web 2.0 tools are so handy, that sometimes educators might forget it's a website and not located on their computer or within the district network. These tools are extremely useful. Please use them carefully.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As you think about posting information online this school year, ask yourself the following questions:

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: large;">Are you planning on making a class website?

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">There is so much to share on your class website to help students, parents, and the community learn how your classroom works. You could:

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Post homework assignments and due dates

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Links to helpful forms and online resources

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Your classroom newsletter (but be mindful of students whose images cannot be posted online)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Class schedule, testing schedule...

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">Are there things that you shouldn't post on your class website? Sure! Many things...
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">Is the information private or sensitive student information? (i.e., IEP's, CSE meeting notes...)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">If so, NEVER post that kind of thing on Web 2.0 tools like Google Docs, Google Sites, wikis, blogs, etc. That is a bad idea.

If you have questions, please ask first. We can work together to determine if something is safe to post online.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Are you planning to post student pictures on your class website or blog?

Please make sure that parents have given their permission to post pictures of their children online.

Does your school have a media release form for parents to sign? Does it include language about allowing kids' pictures to be posted on class websites and other class project sites? It is important to know about this stuff.

Even if it does include such language, you might still consider sending home a copy of the picture with an additional permission form before posting images of children, especially close-up photos.

Images of larger groups working on a project or participating in a fun school activity are safer to post online because it is more difficult to pick out individual faces.

Keep in mind non-custodial parents who are not supposed to have contact with their children and everyone else in the world might stumble upon your public website. When you give people a window into your classroom, make sure you don't open the window too far!
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Are you planning to post student work on your class website?

Again, you need to get parent permission to post student work online.

Does your school have a form for that? They might have it as part of a beginning-of-the-year packet for parents.

Make sure each parent has signed it indicating whether or not they give you permission to post their children's work online. Check your list each time you plan on posting student work (and images, for that matter) online.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Are you working with colleagues on lesson planning?

Posting your lesson plans and supporting materials that you create online is a great way to access your resources from any classroom, home, or any place you have internet access.

Other teachers can benefit from your willingness to share your materials online, too. Win-win!
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Are you keeping track of meeting notes?<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As long as the information is fine to share with the public, feel free to post it online.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">If you are discussing instructional strategies, helpful resources, etc., that is fine to post.<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> If the information includes notes about individual students, don't do it.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Ask me for alternatives and we'll find a method that works for you!
A<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">re there topics that you discuss at meetings that should not be posted? What might they be? I'm sure there are. Use your best judgment.<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">That is really the heart of the matter: Use your judgment. Think about the information you want to post
online and determine if it is appropriate to put online before you post it.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Remember to keep these things in mind when you are posting to the web. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">You would never want to post something that would put a child at risk.
It is a good idea to invite me to participate in your grade level or department meetings. Just listening to your concerns can spark ideas that I can share for ways to use technology to support what you are doing as a grade level or department.

Are you looking for a new way to present something, or are you having a hard time getting your students to understand a concept? Invite me to meet with you so we can brainstorm ways to tackle issues like this. We can use technology to help students visualize many concepts to foster deeper understanding.

Perhaps you would like to develop a WebQuest for your students. Let's develop one together! I also assist teachers in creating ActivInspire flipcharts, and locate interactive online resources and technology materials to support your lesson and unit plans.

You might be thinking about creating a classroom website to improve home-school communication. We can discuss what tool would be best for you to use and how to get started. Many teachers in our region use ToolboxPro, Wikispaces, or Weebly to post information online for parents and community members to access.

Administrators might consider contacting me to present useful technology tools at staff meetings, or to develop customized staff development training for teachers in your school or in the district.
My Twitter friends share so many useful articles, resources, and tips on a daily basis, that I miss it when I'm running full-speed through my day and can't get to it.

In between appoinments today, I had some time to look through Twitter and found an article that @clifmims shared called "Everything you know about curriculum may be wrong. Since we're in the middle of all this change, it might be a good time to rethink the way we approach curriculum.

Before you plan new units around the Common Core Standards, read this article and let me know if I can help.

If you have questions or comments, you can comment here or on Grant Wiggins' blog article. He is answering questions and responding to his readers on his blog. All of your programs are closed and you'll need to log back in to the network and open everything again if you want to begin working on that computer again.

Select LOG OFF if you are done with the network connection. See the image below:

If you use the SWITCH USER option, you maintain your network connection and can keep your programs open, while allowing another user to log in to that computer.

When you select SWITCH USER, you will return to the Welcome screen. If another user wants to log in, he would press CTRL+ALT+DEL | click SWITCH USER | OTHER USER and type his login information.

This is handy for teachers who share a classroom computer with other users. Use the Switch User option so that you can quickly switch back and forth throughout the day without going through the entire log in process and network connection over and over again.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments!Cheryl Ticehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06976366669762311075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481639966829558786.post-17936952889104057332012-02-04T19:43:00.003-05:002012-02-04T20:10:53.771-05:00Save the Projectors!Did you know that projector bulbs generally run about 2000 hours. Some last longer, some do not. That sounds like a lot, but let's break that down.

2000 hours = 250 8-hour days

That's about 1.5 school years of school or less. Remember that as the bulb wears down, it gets dimmer and dimmer until it is very difficult to see the projected image.

The No Show button on the Promethean remotes does NOT save bulb life.

Projector bulbs cost about $150-200 per bulb! That's a lot of money.

If the district had to purchase bulbs for 80 projectors every 2 years it would cost the district about $12,000 - 16,000! Think about the things that could be purchased instead, if you conserve bulb life and make your projector bulb last 3 or 4 years or more...

There are ways to make the bulbs last. Please shut off your projector if:

You aren't going to use it for 20 minutes or more

You and your students aren't in the classroom

You are leaving the building

It takes about a minute for your projector bulb to cool down and 30 seconds to turn it back on.

In these tough economic times, it is important to save money everywhere possible. Do your part! Save the projectors!

Cheryl Ticehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06976366669762311075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481639966829558786.post-60428976917953859332011-11-11T15:18:00.004-05:002011-11-11T15:28:04.501-05:00English Idea: The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson@EdTechSandyK posted a great link to a blog article offering a strategy for helping students reading "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. Awesome stuff!

The teacher in the article had her students participate in a lottery similar to the one in Jackson's short story. The student with the black dot by his or her name was "stoned" with crumpled up papers. She then had her students write a brief reflection on their experience during this lesson. Even though there is a filter on our Internet access, it is not capable of blocking all inappropriate images and websites. It does a good job, but sometimes things get through that shouldn't. It also is interesting to see how many students think Google is the source of the images they find, when in reality, Google is actually searching the web for images posted on other websites.

It is good to know a handful of websites with images across the curriculum for students (and you) to use for projects. *Remember when using images to follow the 'terms of use' of the website. Even though a site might say its images are "royalty-free" or "public domain," you might still be required to cite your source, or they might have other restrictions.

Often, we are in such a rush as educators that we don't think of copyright rules and apply them to our own work, but we should. It is so important to model the behavior of citing sources in our own work that we display for students. If we are models of the behavior we expect from our students, I think it helps them see the importance. Copying text and images from the web is so quick and easy, but it isn't right to take that information without letting people know the source.

---------------------
Clipart & Photo Sites:

Clker.com
(royalty free clipart and vector images in the public domain)

Discovery Education Clipart Gallery
(here are their terms of use)

EduPic.net
(free images for teachers and students to use in their work without permission; images across the curriculum)

Library of Congress: Prints and Photographs Reading Room
(no known restrictions on using these pictures, just cite the source)

Microsoft Office Clipart Online
(download images and save them to your computer so you can insert them into ActivInspire, Word, PowerPoint.....)

Public Domain Clipart
(this site allows you to use the images without citing your source)

Pics4Learning.com
(permission has been granted for teachers and students to use all of the images donated to the Pics4Learning collection)

Do you have a favorite copyright-friendly website you use to search for images? Share it with us!

--------------------

If you still choose to have your students (even middle and high school students) use Google to search the web for images, please consider having them use the Advanced Image Search feature where they can increase the SafeSearch Filter. They can also search for images Labeled for Reuse:

(click for larger image)

This isn't a perfect solution, but it can reduce the possibility of finding inappropriate images and increase the chances that they will find images that are copyright-friendly. Again, I would advise against having students use Google Image Search (or any other search engine), but if you do, this can help.

------------------------

Instead of having students search for images, you could save images the students will need for their project in a folder and give students access to it on a shared network drive (i.e., the M drive). Or you could save shortcuts to web resources with images students can use for their work on a shared network drive. Then you can make sure that the images are copyright-friendly.

------------------------

Not sure how to know if something is copyright-friendly? Learn more about Copyright and Fair Use Laws. If you aren't sure about something associated with copyright, ask your Library-Media Specialist. They're very knowledgeable about that stuff!

------------------------

When students have worked hard to create their own unique work that they post online (i.e., a podcast, image, etc.), let them copyright it. They can do that by using the resources in Creative Commons. It's a great way to help students see the value in copyright. Use the wizard to walk through the process of copyrighting work with students. It's very easy to use!Cheryl Ticehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06976366669762311075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481639966829558786.post-7883816909832489902011-03-10T21:22:00.006-05:002011-03-21T18:26:09.160-04:00YouTube to ActivInspireThere are many educational videos on YouTube, but the comments, advertisements and sometimes inappropriate 'related videos' make it something I notice many teachers avoid in the classroom. That's a shame, because there is a lot of worthwhile material there and you should take advantage of the wealth of knowledge there.

I have created a handout for downloading a video from YouTube and then inserting it onto a flipchart page.

Keep in mind that copyright rules apply! Make sure your use of the videos is within copyright law or fair use rules.

Another thing to consider: when you download video, it is taking up space on your computer, or wherever you store it on the network. Video files are HUGE, so keep this in mind as you download videos.

If you'd rather not download videos, but you want to view them online without all of the comments, ads, etc., use SafeShare.tv. This website really makes cropping the video and linking to it a breeze. Some YouTube videos do not allow embedding, though, so test out the link it gives you before you copy it and paste it into a document, flipchart, website or another program.

An advantage of downloading is that you'll have the video you need whether or not the internet is available for your lesson. And an advantage of SafeShare.tv is that it is quicker than downloading and uses only a hyperlink to the web.

If you want help with these tools, let me know! I'm happy to help :-)Cheryl Ticehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06976366669762311075noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6481639966829558786.post-29196800712491247642011-02-22T08:48:00.007-05:002011-02-22T09:06:32.914-05:00Support Writing in the ClassroomA year or two ago I found a series of presentations that offer suggestions for ways to support student learning. @tombarrett, an educator from the UK has worked collaboratively with people around the world to develop these presentations for educators.

Today I came across one of these presentations and thought I'd share it with you.
